Guerrilla warriors as a teenager
Amineh Kakabaveh was born in the mid 70's, in the part of Kurdistan that is in Iran. She does not know the exact date. She comes from a poor Kurdish family and as a teenager, like several of her relatives, became a member of the socialist Komala's peshmerga.
Peshmerga is a collective term for armed Kurdish national movements and means "those who face death". They often fight guerrilla warfare and have, among other things, played a major role in the fight against IS.
Among other things, Finland has trained peshmerga soldiers who fought against IS in Iraq.
- I was under house arrest with my family for six weeks before I became a peshmerga. The Iranian regime wanted to execute me. They told my father that either you marry off Amineh, when I was twelve years old, or we will take her and execute her, says Kakabaveh and continues:
- That's why I told my dad I'll be peshmerga, I'll fight. It does not matter if I die, I have to.
